Positive and Negative Numbers

Visualizing Positive & Negative

Think of the sea level as 0. Anything above the sea (like a flying bird) is positive (+), and anything below the water (like a swimming fish) is negative (-). Addition (+) means moving UP, and subtraction (-) means moving DOWN.

+ (Plus)
- (Minus)
0

Examples

  • ・ (+3) + (+2) = +5 (A bird at 3m flies 2m higher)
  • ・ (-2) - (+3) = -5 (A fish at -2m dives 3m deeper)

3 Key Points to Understand

1. What about '0'?

0 is neither positive nor negative. It is the special reference point for everything.

2. Absolute Value (Distance)

The sign (+/-) shows the 'direction', and the number shows the 'distance' from 0. This is called the absolute value.

3. Why does subtracting a negative become positive?

Subtraction means 'turn around', and negative means 'move backward'. So, 'turning around and moving backward' results in moving forward (positive).
