Linear Equations (Word Problems)

Translating Words into Math

Word problems can look tricky, but they are just puzzles. The key is to find the unknown value, name it 'x', and express the relationships described in the text as a mathematical equation using '='.

Words βž” Math
"合計で1000円"
βž” = 1000

Examples

  • ・ Buy x apples at $2 each and a $3 basket for $11 total: 2x + 3 = 11.
  • ・ Three times a number x plus 5 equals 26: 3x + 5 = 26.

3 Points to Solve Word Problems

1. Define 'x'

Clearly decide what unknown value 'x' represents (e.g., 'Let x be the number of apples').

2. Look for 'Equals'

Find phrases like 'is', 'equals', or 'totaling' to determine where to place the '=' sign.

3. Check Your Answer

Once you solve for x, plug it back into the original story to see if the scenario makes sense.
