In English, we just use 'to be' for everything (I am happy, I am here, I am a doctor). Spanish splits this into two verbs! Mastering this difference completely changes how you view the world in Spanish and is one of the most rewarding concepts to learn.
Think of 'Ser' as describing the core identity or permanent characteristics of something (What is it?). Think of 'Estar' as describing a temporary state, condition, or location (How is it right now, or where is it?).
Many learners struggle when a word can use both! For example, 'Ser aburrido' means 'to be boring' (personality), but 'Estar aburrido' means 'to be bored' (temporary state). The verb you choose completely changes the meaning!
