💡 Why Learn This?
In English, we just use 'to be' for everything (I am happy, I am here, I am a doctor). Spanish splits this into two verbs! Mastering this difference completely changes how you view the world in Spanish and is one of the most rewarding concepts to learn.
Essence vs. Condition
Think of 'Ser' as describing the core identity or permanent characteristics of something (What is it?). Think of 'Estar' as describing a temporary state, condition, or location (How is it right now, or where is it?).
Ser vs Estar
- ・ Ser: Soy alto (I am tall - characteristic).
- ・ Ser: Eres estudiante (You are a student - identity).
- ・ Estar: Estoy cansado (I am tired - temporary state).
- ・ Estar: Estamos en Madrid (We are in Madrid - location).
